AHM Mini Excavator

Owning an AHM mini excavator isn’t just about having a cool piece of machinery in the shed—it’s about the time you get back. What used to take two weekends and a sore back can now be knocked out before lunch on Saturday.

If you’ve got an AX-12 or AX-17 sitting ready, here are five high-impact projects you can tackle this weekend to completely transform your property.

1. The “Goodbye Stump” Mission

Manual stump removal is arguably the most hated task in landscaping. With an AHM mini excavator, it’s a surgical strike.

  • The Method: Use your digging bucket to trench around the base (about 2-3 feet deep) to expose the main anchor roots.

  • The AHM Edge: Use the hydraulic thumb (standard on many AX models) to grip the stump and rock it back and forth. This rocking motion snaps the deep taproots, allowing you to lift the entire unit out in one piece.

  • Time Saved: 4+ hours of hacking vs. 20 minutes of digging.

2. Install a French Drain (Stop the Swamp)

Tired of that one corner of the yard staying soggy for three days after it rains? It’s time for a French drain.

  • The Method: Use a 12″ narrow trenching bucket to dig a sloped trench from the wet area to a lower exit point or dry well.

  • The AHM Edge: The AX-series is narrow enough (under 3 feet wide for the AX-12) to fit through standard garden gates, letting you dig the drain exactly where the water pools without taking down your fence.

3. Prep for a Dream Patio or Shed Pad

Building a patio or shed requires a perfectly level, compacted base. Doing this with a hand shovel usually results in a “wavy” patio two years later.

  • The Method: Strip away the top 6-8 inches of sod and topsoil.

  • The AHM Edge: Use the front dozer blade to rough-grade the area and the flat bottom of the bucket to “tamp” the subsoil down. You’ll get a professional-grade level surface that’s ready for gravel and pavers.

4. Trenching for Power or Water

Whether you’re running power to a new gazebo or installing an automatic watering system for the garden, hand-trenching 100 feet is a nightmare.

  • The Method: Mark your lines and use the excavator to dig a consistent 18-24 inch deep trench.

  • The AHM Edge: Most AHM machines use internal hydraulic hoses, meaning you don’t have to worry about snagging a line on a stray root or rock while you’re deep in the trench.

5. Boulder Placement & Rock Gardening

Moving a 300 lb decorative boulder is a recipe for a hernia—unless you have hydraulics.

  • The Method: Use the grapple or bucket-and-thumb combo to pick up and place large landscape rocks.

  • The AHM Edge: The 360-degree swing allows you to pick a rock up from your trailer and place it precisely in your garden bed without ever moving the tracks, protecting your grass from unnecessary “scuffing.”

Pro-Tip for the Weekend:

Before you drop the stabilizers and start digging, remember the golden rule of excavation: Call 811 (or your local utility marker) first. It’s free, it’s easy, and it ensures your weekend project doesn’t turn into a neighborhood-wide power outage.
